Virtual Revolution

1.   The web is celebrated as the revolutionary technology that is great

leveling of humanity creating equal opportunity, equal access, and equal

potential. However, there are only a quarter of people on the earth who

can use it. How do you explain the controversial argument here?

Some people cannot access or afford technology. The world without the Internet is hard. Information cannot get to any area and help a foreign country or warn of a war. Without this technology, countries can be completely isolated without contact to the outside world. Some countries only have accessible internet in their libraries or schools but rarely in public places or at home.

2.   How is Wikipedia the best example to implement the leveling ideas of the

Web rooted in the cultural revolution of the 1960s, namely the

Libertarianism in the counterculture? How does it explain some of the

digital convergences?

Wikipedia undercuts authority by giving average people free information that they can author and edit. The idea of individual free will was very big in Libertarianism in the 1960s as well as with the creation of the web. The web has very little boundaries and is very accessible. Libertarianism is strongly against government intervention and want their own freedom. Wikipedia, like Libertarianism discourages the involvement of government and forms of authority while encouraging common people and their individual capabilities.

3.   How does the Web make it possible for different kinds of digital

Convergence?

The Web makes it possible for different kinds of digital convergence because by combining ideas with communication, people can put more ideas together. The Web can contain every media through digitization. All media can be streamed or downloaded from the web, allowing for extreme convergence. You can search for videos, graphics making it the platform for converging media.

4.   How can the Internet become a challenge for traditional authority? Use

the political landscape changes in some countries to illustrate your

Answer.

The Internet can become a challenge for traditional authority because it gives average people the chance to be heard and unite for free. The Internet’s growth gives people a new freedom that goes against traditional authority. In Kenya, many issues during the election were not addressed like violent protests and riots. The Internet was used to challenge the government and bring what's going on in the streets to the government's attention.

5.   In traditional media communication, it has the “vertical” authority. In the

Web communication, it becomes “horizontal?” How do you explain the

change? How does this create the possibility for digital media

convergence?

Big corporations and companies have the power to control the flow and content of media making a top-down authority or "vertical." "Horizontal" authority is crucial to web communication because what the user can control their own flow and content on the Internet. This makes digital media convergence possible because the "horizontal" perspective allows for feed back and communication between the consumer and producer.
