Blogging on Politics 2019

President Donald Trump national security advisor John Bolton on September 10, 2019. His resignation was due to a series of arguments regarding trade with China and Taliban negotiations. A final incident leading to Trump's decision were reports of Bolton disagreeing with Trump's Camp David plan. The reports arose over the weekend, which upset Trump. Donald Trump asked Bolton for his resignation on Monday, and on Tuesday he resigned. The two also disagreed on the Afghanistan deal as well. Bolton had previously been disagreeing with Mike Pence and Mike Pompeo. Bolton also was not apprehensive when it came to military conflict and was very skeptical of negotiations with the Taliban. Bolton and Trump disagreed on Trump wanting leaders of the Taliban to visit Camp David days before the anniversary of September 11, 2011 in an effort to finalize peace talks. Some suggest that John Bolton's absence will give the Trump Administration an easier approach when dealing with Venezuela, Iraq and Afghanistan. Bolton and the administration clashed once again when Bolton wanted to impose harsh sanctions on the Maduro regime. He also opposed renewing a waiver which would let Chevron operate in Venezuela.

This will be the third national security adviser that Trump has replaced, however not everyone agrees with his decision. Mitt Romney claimed that Bolton's absence would "be a loss" for the White House. Others like Rand Paul claim that without John Bolton, there will be no engagement in a war with Iran. Democrat Chris Murphy agrees John Bolton was not a good fit to be the national security advisor. Other Democrats like Bernie Sanders and Nancy Pelosi chimed in, supporting Bolton's resignation. I tend to agree with Trump's decision. Countries like Iran, Venezuela, or Afghanistan do not need a national security advisor who is eager to go to war. With prolonged disagreement between Trump and Bolton, I think the president should be able to trust his national security advisor. I do not think this is a loss for the White House, but it will help them be peaceful in their communication with other countries.

John Bolton had played a key role in conversations about Iran, North Korea, the middle East, and Venezuela. One implication of the decision is that issues with these countries will be approached differently. One concern I have with firing John Bolton is that finding another candidate for the position will be hard, and having fired so many already I don't trust he will find the best possible candidate. The end of this video explains some implications of the resignation, as well as Bolton's stance on foreign policy compared to Trump's vision. Below is also a photo of John Bolton and Donald Trump.
